I dont want to use this module for images, and am really not planning this in the future. But i have to download and instal TWO (imagechac and that requires imageapi) extra modules to get this one running, so i am using more data for one module...

Hmm... Off the top of my head, I suppose it would be nice to have a highslide.module (which houses core functionality) and then a highslide_images.module

On the other hand, since imagecache and imageapi are now in core in D7, I see no real reason to go this direction. Imagecache/ImageAPI are pretty much the standard now.
