Excellent idea - I shall watch this with interest. I too have been working on somethin similar (but not as grand!) and have offered to cvs here - http://drupal.org/node/632656#comment-2264904 it is based on garland.

Hey, thanks, will get started on the D7 version which will be able to come more closely to what I originally achieve without a helper module because of fields and styles in core.

Anyways, too late for theme review. I don't know what the reviewer said, but probably that it was too close to Garland. If you every submit another theme to be able to create full projects (anyone can do sandbox projects now), I'll be happy to review it and help you bring it to Drupal standards.
