For some reason my search facility is not working I just get the blue smurf message when I try and search anything, on closer inspection of the database it appears that the search index table in the database is empty.

I have tried to re-index the database through the UI but this hasn't solved the issue, when I run cron I also get the n/a message not sure if this is linked.

Any helpde would be appreciated

that doesn't sound promising mate. Usually running the cron solves this problem. Are you sure you have ample rights on your dbase? What does Status Report tell you?
