using geo and openlayers (latest alpha 2009-Nov-05 or latest dev 2009-Nov-18) gives following message 

Fatal error: Call to undefined function openlayers_get_default_map() in /sites/all/modules/openlayers/modules/openlayers_cck/openlayers_cck.module on line 659

when nagivating to admin/content/node-type/page/fields/field_location

Add new field: the field name field_location already exists.

since the cck field is in existence but can't edit the configuration

Thanks for the detailed information but the 2.x version of OpenLayers is still very much in development and I don't think the CCK part of it has been updated completely. Rhis will be fixed eventually, but we are still changing and developing the core API stuff for 2.x. Please use the 1.x version if you need CCK functionality.

OpenLayers CCK / WKT support is growing and is semifunctional as of today, but I've stripped out Geo functionality for the time being.

No more information given, and it's likely that this functionality is something that just won't be possible without geo integration, which we aren't willing to provide.
