how and what do i download from the cvs?

i'm a non-technical type person so thanks for understanding...

when i click on the CVS files thingy it all looks rather overwhelming with all those different directories etc...

thanks again for your help...

Hi Marlowx,

If you have just started out with the site, I recommend you switch to 4.6.6 for the moment - there are quite a few modules that come with the ecommerce suite (there's quite a lot) that haven't been updated for 4.7 yet.

re: selling downloads/t-shirts:

There's a FILE module option with the 4.6 version of ecommerce that allows you to sell downloads from your site and it's fairly simple to setup t-shirt/album/merch sales using out of the box modules like the tangible.module.

The main bulk of the work with the ecommerce suite is in theming....i.e. the "engine" you get is very flexible and powerful, but, to tweak how it's presented to your site visitors requires a bit of elbow and mouse grease to get it right.

The ecommerce suite is one of the trickiest modules to install...but for a band site, it's worth it as Drupal is an ideal platform for managing an artist site that has a fan-only area.

There are other options (For selling downloads), such as simply using payloadz or Easy Be to sell your downloads and linking across from your site...or going a step further and using The Orchard to distribute your music to itunes and others (over 100 online shops) and linking from your site, but, if you have the time and patience, stick with Drupal if you can.

Hope that helps..I'm in the middle of buildling a Drupal artist site at the moment and one of the requirements is file downloads along with ringtone sales, physical cd sales, gig tix sales, merch. sales + a fan only area, so I'm in a similar position and have checked out out other options. i.e. the ergonomics of the music download sales system has to be very simple and similar to other online stores, so fans aren't confused or befuddled by the way Drupals Ecommerce modules do downloads.

As an aside...the file.module that comes with Drupals ecommerce suite is actually very good for selling ringtones (especially Truetones). A simple WAP theme allows the fans to login and get the ringtones they have bought - so you don't have to spend a fortune setting up SMS services.

hope that makes sense..dropme an email if you get stuck...I can help install the ecommerce suite for you and then you can take it from there if you want.

thanks Dublin Drupaller,

that is exactly the kind of solution i am looking for!

so what about this concept...

i keep our 4.7 site as the main members site and send store links to the 4.6.x site?

or if i can get the 4.6.x site looking like the 4.7 site then i guess i can just switch everything over... argh...

i will try and set up a 2nd 4.6 site for e-commerce then...

and recreate the theme...

thanks again dude!

Dublin Drupaller’s picture

Sounds complicated to do it that way..(having 2 sites)...

Let me have another look at the 4.7 ecommerce suite to see if you can use it for selling downloads & t-shirts and I'll post back up here.

ideally, you should keep it all under the one site and database. So if you don't mind waiting, I'll have a quick look to see if it is possible with 4.7. When I looked at it (the ecommerce suite) a week or two ago, there were a few modules that needed updating, so I'll check again to see what's what.

Incidentally, what payment method are you planning on using? Paypal/other?

thanks for checking on 4.7 ecommerce...

it just looks too confusing for a newbie/non-technical person to sort through all those directories on the ecommerce cvs downloads... i have tried...

if we can go with 4.7 that would be cool because we already have users coming to the site and some radio stations directing people to the site etc etc...

using paypal at the moment as its cheap/no subscription required...

selling downloads of songs is the biggest priority...

2nd would be selling t-shirts... using some kind of cafepress or goodstorm intergration/module...

ringtones are further down the list but we would love to do that at some point...

thanks again dude...

No worries. It might be a day or two before I get time to check it out..

re: tshirts..there is already a cafepress integration module for 4.7 you can install and setup- it's not reliant on the ecommerce suite.

http://drupal.org/node/60371

however, as a tip..can I mention some Fair Trade suppliers such as Pier merch. and Ethical Threads instead of Cafepress?

Both are UK based.

yeah i can wait, no problem...

i really appreciate your assistance... i have been searching through the forums here for weeks and it seems there are lots of people in the same situation of being stuck between 4.7 and 4.6 ecommerce...

i'll check out those cafepress alternatives too...

thanks again dude!

marlowx’s picture

has anyone installed the ecommerce modules on 4.7.x yet?

how is it working for you?

Dublin Drupaller’s picture

Yep. I have installed it and it works fine Marlow.

A few things though:

(a) I would like to be able to change the default workflow for selling file downloads. At the moment it's a bit clunky, for lack of a better word. Ideally I would like to mimic the simple 1,2,3 steps that 7Digital, easybe and others employ to keep things simple.

For example..I'd prefer 2 clicks for anonymous users. 1 click to buy the track. 1 click to select payment and then do the email/login thing to get the files.

(b) security..something you mentioned on the other thread is a good idea. i.e. move the mp3 music files up another level...to increase the security. Great idea.

(c) formats: I would like to have the option to deliver 3 formats + a progressive streaming preview. So when you upload the audio, it automatically creates and encrypts the 4 files.

I.e. formats would include; WMV, regular MP3 and "ipod mp3". progressive streaming is different from regular streaming and only downloads in chunks, rather than cacheing the full song.

As an aside, "ipod friendly" MP3 might have to be done individually, as that mp3 format is proprietry.

Hope that makes sense...

marlowx’s picture

ah that sounds cool...

when you say "ipod" format are you refering to the AAC format? because ipods can handle various formats... mp3, .wav etc etc...

anyway, yeah i agree with you...

there should be at least 2 files, 3 or more if possible...

1 for sample 2nd for purchase... and 3rd etc for luxury of providing different formats...

but i think also a pdf album sleeve/cd artwork is a must too!

how do we go about encouraging this to happen?

and should we lobby for having audio module place its audio folder by default in a non-web served folder?

rawk on!

oh yeah, almost forgot... where you able to disable the shipping address bit from the buying process of downloaded mp3's? if so, how did you do it? is it as simple as disabling the shipping module?

-=sigh=-

Dublin Drupaller’s picture

I seem to remember that there as an option under the STORES -> SETTINGS menu for each product.

I agree with your idea about the artwork..good one...I think the workflow will be the trickiest part..i.e. re-jigging the default ecommerce workflow to be more like what online music download shoppers are used to..i.e. very very simple..3 clicks and you've got the song(s).

I don't like the idea of having to stop the workflow half way through the process, so the shopper has to check their email...I'd prefer if that was done at the receipt stage.i.e. "thanks for buying the song..check your email for instructions on how to download it" type thing.

Furthermore..if it was "email login details on payment" it would suit selling ringtones as well...i.e. the receipt could be sent via SMS with a link to a Mobile(Wap/imode) theme to download the file (truetone)....etc.

i found non shipable products but it looks like a regular page... i guess i could always attach the mp3 ha ha ha...

-=sigh=-

i can't find any way of turning an audio.module product into a non-shipable product... argh! shouldn't it be non-shipable by default?

how did you guys solve this problem?

Dublin Drupaller’s picture

I was playing with it earlier in the week and there's a patch for the audio.module that converts it to a product.

do a search for "audio.module product".

Hi Marlowx,
While viewing your layout in Firefox 1.5.0.4, I saw some problems on your image galleries page here: http://notetoselfdontdie.com/members/image

The first image galleries block (of your band) looks fine. The text within the other three below that one falls outside of the block area. you may want to increase your
block size vertically or style the text with a smaller font.

The design looks really good though overall. I like the background and clutter-free approach.

thanks i'll check that out.... i noticed that before but i had no luck finding where to change the type sizes on the image page... will have another look though....

Dublin dude, i'll look up that patch for audio module... thanks will post back with results...

i'm also trying to get the "show album artwork" patch working with little success...

-=sigh=-

marlowx’s picture

http://drupal.org/node/62906

i checked out that patch for the audio module to convert to product...

turns out i actually came across that before... and from what i understand it does... its actually not a very good solution for a band website...

you can see my comments on the above link and the reply i got...

in short, when the audio node becomes a product the play and download links/buttons dissapear... this is not good... how are people supposed to preview the song? how are people to know that the song is playable or downloadable if there is no link or button???

it just makes no sense to me... the reply i got was somehting like, hey that sounds like a feature request to audio module...

so what do we do now?

i don't mean to slam the dude who developed the patch, i'm sure its useful for some people...

but for a band website, and i'm sure there are loads of bands who would be dying for a drupal solution, seems to need some organized push for overall features / user experience...

so that you CAN preview a song before you buy it, so that the band's work is somewhat if even moderatly more securely stored and the purchase and download is streamlined...

especially if this means coordinating ideas/features across 2 or 3 modules...

does that make sense?

marlowx’s picture

feel free to jump in everybody and voice any criticisms or alternate views or features etc etc that you would like to see for a band site...

it would be cool if we could throw together a list of features and/or ways that we would like to see things work (for example, previewing and buying and then downloading mp3 files) so that someone can put forth a nicely worded and comprehensive "spec" that the community and work on or from?

any thoughts?

Now I'm try to setup a mp3-selling site, offering per-song and/or per-album downloads selling.
Playing around ecommerce file.module I found the sad thing - disappeared "play" button after turn single audio node into product.
Searching drupal.org brings me only this posting with request of such future. Marlowx , did you find anything about this issue? May be we should add a future request to audio.module author, as supposed by yogadex in http://drupal.org/node/62906, where he said that "... sounds like a feature request to audio module"?
May be somebody here, interested inthis, have any news about this issue?

UPD: Created feature request here: http://drupal.org/node/69678. Let's see.

i think there should be a sample file as well as the file you pay for and download...

that way you could choose to have a lower quality version that people can sample free... or a sound clip, like the first 30 seconds... and then you can buy and download the full length high quality one...
