If you upload many modules / themes, but do not activate them, will it affect the speed of the page? I often upload a set of modules and using only the ones I need right then.

I think....
Not.
Except that it will make your admin/build/modules page load very slowly, and that amount of clutter can lead to error. But otherwise, if the module is not loaded, it will not slow you down. Assuming your disk is not overloaded.
Oh, and if you uninstall a module, run the uninstall routine to clear out useless tables.
Okay, someone tell me I am wrong.

No it wont affect
the enabled modules only influence speed.
the biggest factor influencing speed is the theme used.

I would agree with everything
I would agree with everything Cayenne said.
Regarding this:

I would not agree. Each site is different but for most sites, there is probably more CPU processing for modules than the theme and the amount of JS processing client side (which affects render time and is perceived by the average user as 'load time') can be equally split between theme and module JS code--it all depends on which theme and which modules.

I do agree with:

Given the fact that about 80% of page load times are spent on the client side (see http://yuiblog.com/blog/2006/11/28/performance-research-part-1/), optimizations in the theme layer (CSS sprites for instance) often have a bigger effect than server side optimizations.
Thanks everone
Now I know why it goes so slow to manage the pages. No matter what computer I work from, it's takes to long time. I will set up a new page today, and just upload the modules and themes I definitely need to see if it goes faster. I will come back with my experiences
