How do I keep track of variables

As someone who is very new to features and strongarm (and this is probably the wrong place to ask!), how would you recommend that I keep track of settings / variables that I've changed / enabled.

I only have a handful of dependent modules but some of these have so many variables. I can see this becoming unmanageable...!

To bring things back into topic, could something be added to strongarm in order to help?
