Two very helpful answers.

You can install in either root or a subdirectory, though, if it doesn't matter to you, you should install in the root.

What if I want to change from subdirectory to root after I installed (after testing I want to move it to the root)? Is that hard? How would you do it?

I also want to know how to move an instal from a subfoder to the root directory. I want build the drupal site in a subfolder as the main folder contains a live site that will eventually be replaced.

Being new to this, could someone provide step-by step notes.

Thanks,
Alex

I found Taking your site live to be helpful in the past (be sure to read through all the comments as well).

I attempted a fresh install to the root, and I couldn't get anything to work.

I was continually getting a 'Page not Found' error.

In settings.php i had set
$base_url = 'http://gupi.info';

and in the .htaccess I had set
RewriteBase /

but I was still receiving the 'Page not Found' error when navigating to the domain.

Any hints??
