I love Drupal's native forum esp. after adding advanced forum. However, my website needs much more functionality with the forums than it offers. Well, it needs it out of the box as I'm not a programmer.
I would just a soon require two different logins but that according to the owner is out of the question.
I now have phpbb3 embedded into the site and been having lots or problems with session handling. I've checked twice to make sure that the cookie domain is set proper and the $base_url is set proper. Drupal is sending me cached pages for an anonymous user while I'm logged in as user or as admin. Drupal has also locked other users out of certain areas.
Do you use phpbb3 without any problems? If so how is it configured?
Do you use vBulletin without any problems? If so how is it configured?
If a few of you get back to me that vBulletin works I'll drop the money for the license right now.

I have the same issues with users remaining logged in with my phpBB3 integration...
I plan on moving from the phpbb Drupal integration module to the phpBBforum module, since the former appears to be dead. If that works, I am actually planning on migrating the phpBB posts into the native Drupal forum.. the phpBBforum change is only in case the migration to Drupal forum fails...

Would you do me a huge favor? I'm running phpBBforum at http://thetriton.com. It's a live site and creating another installation on a different server is not going to happen. I'll drop the forums before I have to do that much work. Would you please create a user and take the forums for a test run. You will be able to see how well the phpBBforum works embedded in Drupal.
There is a way to import phpBB forums into Drupal. Also the Advance Forum module is really good and Michelle works very hard on it. Unfortunately, I would have to do some custom mods to get it to do what I need, which vBulletin and phpBB3 do natively. I just want to get the forums up and running.

On F1M I really have no real issue using phpBB, aside from the goofy auth problem, but I want to try to keep everything in Drupal now.
I also see you are using the Gallery2 integration.... I tried that for a bit but it really started to kill my web server.

I deleted the session table in the drupal database. Also, I deleted the sessions in the phpbb database. Things are running smooth except on the front page which is http://example.com/node. Sometimes it shows me the front page as though I'm not logged in. When I refresh the page it logs me in. Maybe the path in the cookie being / has something to do with it.
It's still very scary. We publish this months issue of the newspaper in a couple of days and we will get thousands of hits when that happens. The forums are new and need to work.

Just for reference, F1M generates about 2000 visits and just over 10K pageviews per day according to Google Analytics. So far I have not nuked the shared web hosting I am on, although I wonder about the load on the MySQL server. That's the area you might want to keep an eye on - I think the combination of the three packages you have - Drupal, phpBB, and Gallery2 - may put a strain on MySQL.
Keep an eye on the number of simultaneous connections, you may hit your max number. Also, I would check to see if query caching is turned on and has memory allocated to it. I had one MySQL server set up where it is turned on, but had no memory allocated.

The problem I've been having
The problem I've been having is with the system not respecting logged in users. It loads certain pages as though the user is logged out and throws a access denied error when they try to log in.
I uninstalled phpBB3 and erased everything. The problem still persists and it's scary as hell. I can revert the database but I will lose so much work.
I wouldn't touch that module phpbb integration module at all.

I'm going to try to get
I'm going to try to get Drupal Advance Forum installed with Node Comments and Node Forum modules. I'm getting lots of lovely errors with the Advanced Profile Kit. (The site's owners made me launch the site as is three weeks ago, so I've had my hands tied behind my back since.)
Yes, that is very interesting that you got the home page! I get the homepage while logged in and it's cached treating me like I'm anonymous. If I refresh it, it works proper again. Unfortunately, over the last couple days the site's users are just using other sites.
All the caching is turned off right now. I have no friggen idea what is going on and I'm terrified to revert the site to the pre phpbb state from two weeks ago because I've done so many little tweaks to make it nicer which I'll have to do all over again. ARGH!!!!
p.s. Don't use the phpbb integration module. It's toxic. It's not like ...... oh this doesn't work better just revert from yesterday's backup..... it's oh, the problem is subtle and I didn't discover it for ten days making it difficult to revert. I can't even recreate the problem

which likely means you are using Drupal 5.x the module linked to hasn't had any CVS activity for over 2 years, doesn't look to have ever made it to D6 and all releases have been unpublished. It's great that you've no issues but Drupal 5 will be sunset as soon as Drupal 7.x is released which isn't all that far off. Using an actively maintained module is far more suitable for newer users especially where D6 is being used.

Actually I am using the D6 version that was sorta released. I have really not had a problem with the module - there is some odd 'logged in, but not acting like logged in' behavior but my users have not had a problem with it.
I may see about directly migrating to Advanced Forum instead of using the phpbbforum module as an intermediary... not a big rush, I have other things to do first.

It's a very hard problem because it's difficult to recreate. Here are is a discussion about it http://drupal.org/node/639570. There is a link at the end to a patch for .htaccess which must be fairly important since Dries wanted it committed to CVS.

It definitely seems like that module is defunct and the momentum is currently with the http://drupal.org/project/phpbbforum module. Though judging by the usage statitics, it still doesn't seem a very common way to handle it.
