These changes read well to me, I agree that they are all an improvement, thanks for your work yoroy.

Ok, here's a patch, this should be the result:
I couldn't come up with a description that really added useful info to the child page content type selection so I removed it. Since it's radios, so a single choice, I decided to remove 'Default' from the label.
