This is quite strange, but suddenly my forum disappeared.
Not in its entirety, but just its toplevel.

Sublevels seem to be intact:
http://www.opentravelinfo.com/forums/ask+travel+advice/general+advice
but when I go to the toplevel:
http://www.opentravelinfo.com/forums
I only get:

"No forums defined"

I searched the drupal.org forums, but it seems like its a permissions issue in most cases. All permissions are ok and when I go to
Admin -> Content Management -> Forums I get

"There are no existing containers or forums"

Again this is quite strange. So my question:

How do I recover (e.g. rebuild without affecting the lower levels). All posts are still there and I don't want to lose them.

Seems like the problem lies with the Taxonomy Module.
I have two entries for Forums under admin/content/taxonomy (content management -> categories).
When I delete the empty entry, it is immediately recreated.
It shows up as "affixed to node type forum" while the real entry only has the checkmark on forum. I have no clue how to change this. I am looking through the database, but it doesn't seem to help.
What can I do to stop this from happening?

---edit---
disabled forums, deleted second table, reenabled forums did not work either.
the non functioning tax term is gone, but i cannot "affix" the old one to forums, i can only enable Forum Topic.
