I noticed that any avatars that aren't quadratic are distorted in the Friends Gallery view, as they are automatically stretched to a quadratic format.

The problem persits both in my site's Arthemia and in the default Garland theme.

How can I fix that?

The module doesn't affect avatar display, they are shown using standard Views functions. So, I don't think UR is responsible for that. For what it's worth on my test site avatars look fine when shown using the standard User: Picture views field.
