Making a custom navigation menu with images instead of plain links

Hi. I'm new to Drupal (v6.14), and I'm trying to figure out the best way to add images to my navigation menu. I'm currently on shared hosting, so I'm trying to keep my module count low and make sure I'm only using modules that have been well tested.

I've come across two modules that might work - Menu Icons and Sprite Graphic Menu - but before i launched into anything, I was hoping to get some feedback from more experienced Drupal users about these modules or other methods I should consider.
