On a new site; when I create image nodes, the thumbnails are being created square, from originals that are wider then higher. The preview size and two other sizes I've configured are being created correctly, rectangular. Any clues?

Woops; It was not that the image thumbnails were being created square, but rather, the theme (mollio) was distorting the way thumbnails were displayed. Problem solved. Hope this helps somebody else in the future...

How did you hack the mollio theme so that images are displayed in correct proportion?

i found d fix myself.

just fix the style.css
go to the thumbnails section
remove the width:100 and the background white
