I did not post about this right away -- I thought it might be a theme issue, or a module issue, so I've tried many different scenarios but so far no luck. Have not found any posts about this issue.
Literally the update.php gives a blank screen
http://hvy.heavybubble.net/update.php
Going to the actual URL gives errors, but I have found that to be common when a schema needs to be upgraded.
I was able to start a new website and get it running fine in 6.14 -- http://segd-dc2010.com, but I have many client websites in 6.13 and am concerned about security, so I need to upgrade them.
I'm planning to do another systematic session of adding only one module at a time, etc., but wanted to post in case it was a known issue.
I will update if I have any breakthroughs, thanks

Just had this problem after cleaning up themes
Make sure the theme used by update is available - usually Garland.
restored all themes packaged with 6.14 - same issue
Thanks for responding -- I had eliminated all but Garland (and Minnelli), so I restored the entire original theme folder just in case. No change.
