Drupal Email

I have a simple question, and I don't know much about this, or how email works, but I will be learning soon.

Can Drupal act as an email host? What I mean is, a member creates an account on a Drupal site and their user ID is "Name". My domain is example.com. So, there email will be name@example.com. They can send emails and receive emails from their account. Is there anything special I should know about setting this up? Thanks, hope this isn't too technical to be in General Discussion, I'm only curious if this is possible really.

If there are modules that help in doing this, I'm all ears!
