We have biblio running on a db with about 500 references, and everything is working great. We are considering adding a yes/no flag to our records to identify whether or not they are available as part of the OAI (Open Access Initiative). We would then use this flag to add the OAI logo as an icon in the margin (or some other indicator) in the biblio results list so that users could tell before clicking on anything whether or not an article was available in an OAI-compliant archive somewhere.

We could use one of the custom fields for this, but I wondered what the "Label" field was for. Perhaps it would be a better choice? And we could expand it to include other kinds of icons in the future if that were needed...I'm not sure what the "normal" use of the "Label" field is.

It also occurred to me that perhaps we could just run some kind of test on the URL or DOI fields that would programmatically determine whether or not something was an OAI-compliant reference, but I couldn't think of a test that would work for such a thing (we still want to be able to include both URLs and DOI entries for non-OAI references).

Most of those field names come straight from EndNote (since that's where this whole thing started). EndNote has a "Label" filed, so if you import from EndNote, then there is the possibility of a conflict, however if you don't use EndNote, then it should be safe to use that field for whatever you like.

Similarly, the "CustomX" fields are used only by EndNote so the same applies here.

BTW, You need to be careful when talking OAI, since there is also (and what I thought you were referring to at first) an Open Archives Initiative which OAI more commonly refers to.

Oops. Errr...I thought they were the same thing!! That's why I was thinking about "OAI-compliant" archives. Thanks for noting the confusion. I'll be sure to refer to it as Open Access from now on. And to make sure that my project makes sense. Evidently, I'm more of a web designer than a librarian...
