I've been tasked with implementing the "Get Started" (design prototype) page. The Get Started page has been defined in the redesign prototype description page as a "page with cross promotions to the commercial services and documentation pages."
In searching google, I've found an existing d.o handbook section that is actually fairly well-known and widely referenced called "Getting Started". Its commonly referred to on podcasts and in presentations and even has its own clean url http://drupal.org/getting-started as well as a top-left corner sidebar block.
The function of the new Get Started page and the existing handbook section are completely different, but they are related in that the Get Started page does link into the Documentation section of d.o and references various handbooks by name.
The existing Getting Started page itself does mention that its currently under reorganization, and on the handbook listings page, it includes three handbooks:
Understanding Drupal, Installation Guide and Administration Guide. In the Getting Started block, there is only one section (the understanding drupal) but thats a different issue altogether.
Given the new page's high place of importance in the masthead main navigation menu bar on the redesign, I would expect that the new Get Started page would have a clean easily accessible url as well (eg http://drupal.org/get-started) and this, coupled with the pure naming conflict will probably cause a bit of havoc and confusion for people and search search engines if steps are not taken for disambiguation of the page title and urls.
Also, since the handbook section is more about reading the manuals and the Get Started page is more about taking action and moving around on the site for downloading, extending, etc, I think the term 'get started' works well, and should stick; and I would propose the window title be in agreement with the page title (eg, 'Get Started with Drupal | drupal.org' or whatever the format is chosen to be for title tag), and that the entire handbook section be reconsidered for both human and search engine disambiguation purposes and the url be moved elsewhere as part of the documentation section.
Some ideas I came up with for the handbook section might be: Introducing Drupal, Introduction to Drupal, Beginners Guide to Drupal, Drupal for Beginners.
Finally, I'm wondering if this naming conflict has already been discussed elsewhere. And if its not been resolved yet, who from both the redesign team and the existing site's getting started section do I need to get involved to resolve this?

webchickNo need to tag an issue with its project name. :)

lisarex commentedMoving to new section-specific component
The new site IA overrides the old, in my opinion, so the documentation will need to change (it might be on documentation.drupal.org as well).... someone from the docs team can weigh in on the new title of the handbook section. Your suggestions sound good!

arianek commentedHi - docs team piping up here, so that is as bit of an issue from our side. The "Getting Started" section of the handbook really is that - how to get your Drupal site up and rolling.
And the list of sections on this main docs landing page is going to list *all* top level handbook sections, so it really isn't a beginners guide, or intro or anything of the sort. It is the complete handbook.
So IMO the title should reflect that it's a heading on the listing of sections for the entire handbook. Something more appropriate would be "The Drupal Handbook".
Will try and get some of the other docs lead types to come give their 2 cents as well.

lisarex commentedAwesome, thanks Ariane.
So the main documentation page will be have the path /documentation until you move to your subdomain. This matches the navigation tab 'Documentation' (and would be an SEO issue otherwise)
"The Drupal Handbook"... that feedback should go back to psynaptic once he posts the update on #669886: Documentation Home because I think we gave it a different subheading. :)

jhodgdonI agree with #3.
What is the difference between this issue and #669886: Documentation Home?

drummI think the handbook has been reorganized since this issue was last raised. http://drupal.org/getting-started still exists, but seems kinda pithy, I think it may be a leftover page. http://drupal.org/handbook has a Getting started heading with 3 sections, and looks good.
https://infrastructure.drupal.org/drupal.org-style-guide/prototype/getst... isn't just documentation and will stand on it's own, but that's another issue.
