http://drupal.org/forum

at the top of the first forum container "Try searching the forums using the advanced search option first"

That sentence should likely be altered so users who are trying to find advanced search can stop chasing their tails : )

The searching the forums part is a link; I guess the users are supposed to click on the link, and they would be taken to the search page.

That link can stay. However, users who've installed drupal and aren't aware that d.o doesn't use the core search feature look for the advanced search feature mentioned at the top of the forum expecting it to be there because it is part of their install.

I agree.
The fact the search page is the advanced search page, or the normal search page should not make any difference for the user. The sentence should be changed to avoid confusion.

I changed the wording - replacing "searching the forum" with "searching the site" - answers can be anywhere!

It now reads

Try searching the site or a specific project's bug reports first. Remember all support on this site is on a volunteer basis, so please visit the forum tips for posting hints.
