I installed v6.x.1.5 and configured the module as i have on other sites. I set it up to Hide Descriptions and all of the appropriate icons appear in the body of the page as expected. However, I cannot get the top row of tabbed icons to display.

I was experiencing this issue for users that weren't user 1.

To resolve this, I went to admin/build/themes/settings/rootcandy under Theme-specific settings > Navigation > Menu by role and weights and changed my Site Admin role to use "default navigation" and then dragged that role to the top of the list. Refreshed the Site Admin user and the tabs were in place.
