Module does not recognize other versions of curl?

Using apt-get install php5-curl, it adds other dependencies in debian, but this does not satisfy what the module wants.

Is there a broader way for the module to recognize compatible versions, or does the user have to go through trial and error to see if a recompile of curl is required?
