Hi does flashy effectively replace all the other players or is this exclusively for playing FLV formated video... eg one has to transcode from mp4 avi etc, first?

Flashy supports any video format that has native handling in Flash itself. At this time that's flv, fv4, and mp4. It doesn't do audio files at the moment.
