I must be an idiot as I can't figure this out - also can't find it via googling.

I'm adding a comment balloon next to my titles as can be seen here: http://www.behindthemixer.com/
I've modified the style.css and node.tpl.php to get this effect.
When I view an individual node (blog entry/article), I also want the comment count displayed. But it's not displayed, as you can see here:
http://www.behindthemixer.com/content/need-help-portable-audio-system

Must I have the comment module?
