It appears that I cannot categorize my events in the event.module using a taxonomy. I'd like to be able to do that, so that users could find events according to topics that interest them.

TAxonomy support should be there. At least it used to be. The code is still there. Are you sure you set your vocabulary to "event"?

Yes, it works fine. I just had the taxonomy configured for all node types except Events.
