Is this a common convention?

What is the benefit of using lighter than absolute black for text?

simple, its easier on the eyes. Even here on Drupal the Text is not black

I suspected that was going to be the answer, but on my Win2000 system, the text in these messages is somewhat semi-washed out in some of the pixels, which I find a little distracting. Does it have the same effect on XP and other OSs?
