"search" box text area is disappearing after the site has been running a few hours or days.
domainname.com/update.php recovers it, but then it disappears again later.

any ideas?

Did you check your access permissions for the search module for all the users (and anonymous) ?...

I looked at the code and there is no reason for this to happen.
Is is most likely a block config/access permissions mismanagement.
