I would like to be able to mark users not only as 'attended' or 'did not attend', but also as 'was late', 'was excused', so that I can use the signup module in a classroom situation with students attending a class.

Also it would be nice if some comment could be added, like: student is ill, had to got to dentist, or wathever.

It's kind of a work-around, but I've got the basic functionality you're describing by using signup_status in place of the attendance options, and a comment field added to the signup form where the admin can add info.
