the video converts and plays, but im getting "thumbnail not available" thumbnails. the teaser has one but the view i made has two. Im using a custom zen subtheme with node-video.tpl.php in it (with the addition of code from the help section, of course) but that isn't doing anything. in addition im getting jw player error #2036

For the JW Player error, you should probably search on the longtailvideo.com site for assistance. If the "thumbnail not available" image is showing, you should check to see if the jpg thumbnails are actually being created as you've specified. If they're not being created in the expected location, that would explain things a bit more.
