convert file attachments to imagefield, or import?

Hello all,

I have a website where the original developer used standard drupal File Attachments to upload the image for the node, then used custom theme and module code to display it. I would like to get this client back into the right way to handle images, but they have nearly 2000 nodes which were created this way.

Does anyone have experience in this issue? Or in importing a large number of imagefield records? Helpful for any advice or tips I can get.
