The images on my site are generating 403 errors where once they were displaying correctly.

When logged in as a user, the images display fine, however when logged out they generate a 403 error when you try to access them from the node eg. image/view/1982/preview

However the actual image is accessible eg. xxx.preview.jpg

I have tried all the other suggestions to get around this, such as granting "view originals" to anonymous user, disabling and reenabling image module, even rebuilding the node access table.

first thing that I'd do is update to the latest stable version to ensure the bug is still present and hasn't already been fixed.

Then I'd check administer -> post settings is there a button to rebuild the access table?

as a side note: I'd also ensure that core is updated to the latest stable release of the major version in use.
