IE display problem

Hi,
Can someone explain me why my front page (created with Garland theme) looks so different with IE? I have included a picture of my screens, one with IE and one with Chrome or Firefox. You can see that the main content block is much too wide with IE, it even covers the user login in the left sidebar. It's very annoying.
Any help would be very appreciated.
