multiple images with the same name

When two images are uploaded for different taxonomy terms, where the images have the same file name, the first image uploaded is overwritten by the second uploaded image. Would it be possible to change this so that the second image is renamed, e.g. foo.jpg would be changed to foo_0.jpg. This is the way that the core upload module works.
