Just got this up : www.planetjazz.org
Generally, it's a fan site but I wish it could go beyond that.
Still working on the theme. It doesn't look "OK" in Internet explorer 6 and lower.

Cool site

Yours too. I like your blog site. Because I can relate to what you're posting. PBB... :)

Just fixed the forum stylesheet. Things are looking "OK" now...

Hello katz - thank you for the visit :)
I'm a bit slow with the response nowadays because I am doing
too many things at once, but I went back to your site and things
are going well. I followed the link to Jasmine's site, did you design
that? I thought I saw the "design by katz" somewhere.

Anyways, the only MP3 I got by Jasmine is her first song the McDo
commercial. When I find a better song, I will post the mp3/lyrics/picture
along with my collection using the drupal audio module.

Oh yeah!, check this out

- you can share your work with the drupal community -

Negative response from thre regulars

kgp22 - June 4, 2006 - 04:01

Cool... I'll check out your site.
I did design jasminetriasonline.com (still working on it)

I've got negative response from the regulars (those who post more often than I do). I thought shifting to drupal would be great. They actually find drupal's forum unfriendly (difficult to understand). Not to mention the apparent limitations.
I am a bit disappointed since I worked my ass to make the site look great. Vbdrupal, in case you haven't heard it yet, is a great solution to my problem. I did try it out but there isn't a single stable release of the fusion (of drupal and vBulletin) yet.

But unlike the others, I will not give up.

Normal reaction

monyo - June 5, 2006 - 04:49

Don't be disappointed Katz, you have done great with planetjazz. Running a community website is never easy and it seems like the work never ends. Your move to drupal will payoff at the end.

When I first heard of drupal about a year ago, my first disappointment was the core forum. I was used to the way vBulletin, smf and phBB operates. It seems like drupal's forum just didn't measure up. But over time, I got used to it's simplicity. Actually, I find it easier to follow a thread in drupal's forum than it is in any of the full blown forum apps.

I dunno if it's a good idea to switch back to vBdrupal on your production site. Maybe test it first before you make the switch.

I'm always around here reading threads or at my testsite breaking it :) ... just holler if you need anything.

I'm quite cool with drupal's

kgp22 - June 6, 2006 - 01:56

I'm quite cool with drupal's forum myself. I find it easier to modify. But the users have a problem with simplicity. They are used to Invision boards and PHPBB.
And there's something about the bbcode module. I think it's bugged. Most of the posts look like this:

Dunno about BBCODE

monyo - June 8, 2006 - 01:44

I have not tried BBCODE... but have been using tinyMCE with img_assist, when setup properly I think work just fine. Maybe it has something to do with the filters?

Oh yeah, I checked out the phpBB2 integration with drupal. I think it is worth looking into. The setup wasn't that hard, and as far as I can tell, the single logon works. The only thing is that, my experience with phpBB was that, mods are done on the code manually. I don't know if mods are still manually done with phpBB2.

I will wait till you're done with your modifications and visit your site again.

PHPBB2 and Drupal

kgp22 - June 12, 2006 - 07:46

Yes, I think I'm gonna have to do the integration.
I think the MODS and Hacks are still done manually. (Find line and replace... blah blah... and they said it was EASY!)

I have modified a display recent topics hack in page-front.tpl. This is similar to the display new forum topics block of drupal.

Cool - I can't wait to see

monyo - June 13, 2006 - 00:14

Cool - I can't wait to see what you've done with the phpBB integration. I am picking up ideas for when I finally launch my new pinoy site.

In a few months, my test domains will expire and I will not renew them. I will register a new domain, maybe something that will sound pinoy. I have not been active in actually building a community since I have been busy at work, but I think I will give it a try. I'm also thinking of using a different linux server, I'm using fedora at the moment but have not decided what to use next. I'm about 80% done with the new theme which will look completely different than traditional drupal sites. Then on to work on the icecast module with tunez (GPL) as the front-end. I'm hoping to integrate it with drupal.

Wow! there's so much to do within the next few weeks. BTW .... I'm posting this message using my new MacBook pro. I love it. I'm running the Parallels Desktop with virtual windows xp. I can't tell the difference between my old laptops running windows XP and the MacBook pro running the virtual desktop. Now I don't have to switch laptops when I want to test the drupal test sites with safari/firefox/ie. I can just press control+alt to switch between linux/windows/os x. You have got to get one chicka :P ... I was at Star Bucks the other day and I drew a crowd when I was showing off switching between operating systems. Overall I'm happy I purchased the MacBook Pro instead of another PC. This is my first MAC and I don't think I will be gentle with it. I will put this laptop to an extreme use.

Let me know when you're done with your site. I want to see all the good stuff and maybe copy it :)
Oh before I forget, I didn't know you speak tagalog. I saw your post at my test site. I thought you were born and raised in Hawaii, dunno what gave me that idea. Oh well, catch you later :)

still struggling

kgp22 - June 14, 2006 - 13:23

Hi. I'm still struggling with drupal 4.7. I am still trying to figure out how to make Nifty Corners work. I guess there's an extra step in making javascript work with 4.7. Even the PNG logo doesn't show on some pages. This is an IE issue.

And the admin page doesn't look "OK". I have only experienced this after upgrading to 4.7.

To be able to integrate PHPBB with drupal, the version has to be 4.7.2. And both PHPBB and Drupal have to be a fresh install. I even had to make a forum archive: http://www.planetjazz.org/oldforum/
GIGO. I dropped all topics of little or no relevance. And that's what's left of the forum.

I've got to tell you that I might eventually get a vBulletin license (just waiting for 3.6 version) and switch to vBdrupal. The integration (PHPBB and Drupal) works. But there are still frustrating errors.

Your plan of building a Pinoy Community sounds interesting. You know what... . You don't have to think too much to create a successful Pinoy site. Look at kalibog.com or praning.com. No-brainer sites succeed. Just kidding. I think there should always be a music section. Good luck on your new site.

Cool. LOL. I can't relate 'coz I'm just borrowing my aunt's laptop. Well, what would you expect from a 19-year-old?

And no, I'm not born or raised in Hawaii. I was born and raised in Baguio City.

Logo with transparent background

monyo - June 15, 2006 - 00:53

Yup - IE support for png is still not up to par and although there are remedies out there, I tend to choose the easy way out and attack the problem's root cause. In this case it is png cross browser support and it is only a problem when your png file uses transparency. Why not just use a gif version of your logo? I think the logo for planetjazz can be rendered in less than 256 colors. The author of the 4.7 theme "Fern" seems to have a solution by running a script to render png correctly in IE. Check it out here http://drupal.org/node/65931 , when you download the theme, in his page.php.tpl he referenced a script called IE7 which is suppose to correct the png transparency issues. All the information and instruction is within the author's readme/install file.

Your niftycorner issue is probably just a path attribute issue. I'm not sure if you are running your own server or being hosted but java scripts are often path sensitive. If you are running your drupal site in a subdirectory within your web root then make a reference to the correct path. Check your log to see if your webserver is complaining about not finding the niftycorner.css.

A 19 year old Filipina born and raised in Baguio City? Wow, I don't think I can remember that far back, hahaha :), well with your knowledge in scripting I'm sure one day you will be a drupal master and earn extra cash to buy your own laptop so you don't have to wrestle for it with your tita.

I don't know if I really want to build a web community, there seem to be plenty already. A test site works out well since I don't even need to be there all the time. You can just have my chat and my radio stream when my domain expires, maybe you can put them to good use.

Well chica, I'm off to the movies. I know you are constantly working on planetjazz so I will leave you be.

Nifty Corners issue

kgp22 - June 17, 2006 - 13:59

Hi, monyo. Thanks. I don't know if I will pursue a career in I.T of Finance (or both). I'll be a graduate of Financial Management next year. For now, designing is just a hobby. I'm just doing it for fun. Besides, at this age, "freelancing" means working for free. Apart from my studies, I also help my aunt in managing the family business. Time, not really money, is the most scarce resource for me.

Thanks for the help on the PNG ISSUE. I got the Fern theme.. And yeah, that script works. But I'm already using one which works with IE6.

I just found a thread, which addresses the problem of including javascript in drupal 4.7:
http://drupal.org/node/52661

Java Scripts

monyo - June 20, 2006 - 03:56

That article sounds interesting enough, I think I can use it with one of the module I am working on. I've done something similar for my pop up with the icecast and the onion bar module but I think I'll rewrite that section to follow along drupal's advise.

Finance and computers go hand in hand. I think you'll be one bad Finance Manager knowing what you know in scripting. Transformation of numbers into an actionable information has been possible with the help of application written specifically for that purpose and in today's finance world, often it is associated with web apps.

Unless you are going to inherit a company, knowledge in scripting is always a plus when starting from the pit working your way up. Don't forget mon mon pag sikat ka na :)

Good Luck on your module...

kgp22 - June 20, 2006 - 07:22

I find "Finance" too broad. I was formerly an Accountancy major. (Yeah, I'm a drifter...)
But the basic principles (practical ones) are very much applicable on any field. Whether you're freelance designer, a programmer or a bank manager, the principles apply.

My computer skills could help me someday. I don't know how though. But I think I would also venture into business if I earn enough money as a CFA (I would need a lot of $$$ to take the board exam in Hong Kong). I'm just praying the Lord would help me out on that.

On Planetjazz, the javascripts are now working. There's an audio and video section. I have yet to improve the interface.

Good luck on your module. I'll post when the site is up and running.
