Adding classes to tabs via code in template.php?

I've got some curved overlapping tabs that I can't seem to theme correctly without some way of selecting the first and last tabs individually to apply their respective backgrounds. Does anybody know how to add first and last classes to the local task tabs(view, edit, outline, etc), maybe through some code in template.php? I think even just adding a last class would be sufficient.
