I'm getting familiar with xtemplate and dreamweaver simultaneously... and could use some advice!

In order to edit the xtemplate.xtmpl file in dreamweaver, I have to first rename it to .html. When it starts to look right, I have to rename it back to xtemplate.xtmpl.

I tried adding xtmpl to the MMdocumenttypes.xml file for dreamweaver without success. If this is the best approach, I don't know the correct change to make.

Thanks!
- Joe

In case anyone else is searching for the answer, here is what I've been able to do.

I inserted the following code at the end of the MMdocumenttypes.xml file.

 <documenttype id="xTemplate" internaltype="HTML" winfileextension="xtmpl"
	macfileextension="xtmpl" file="Default.xtmpl" writebyteordermark="false">
	<TITLE>
		<MMString:loadString id="mmdocumenttypes_64" />
	</TITLE>
	<description>
		<MMString:loadString id="mmdocumenttypes_64" />
	</description>
</documenttype>

There were 63 document types in my system, if you have more than you'll need to change the number accordingly.

This change makes it possible for me to select the file from finder and choose open with "dreamweaver".

I still can't do a file open from within dreamweaver... if you figure it out, please post here.

Thanks,
- joe

I've just figured out how to do this in Adobe GoLive and am about to add it to the documentation.

Hope someone can come up with a solution for Dreamweaver.

well, i'm using dreamweaver 4.0. i can set dreamweaver to open xtmpl in code view under preferences->file types/editors by just adding it to the list there. then i can open xtmpl via the open dialogue. but it will not allow me to see it in wysiwyg mode. however, i have not done your xml file change.

hope this helps

It probably depends on your installation, you can do a search on your system for "MMDocumentTypes.xml". Mine is in "joe/Applications/Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004/Configuration/DocumentTypes/MMDocumentTypes.xml"

Good luck,

just add xtmpl to &lt;documenttype id="HTML" ... winfileextension ...&gt; in MMDocumentTypes.xml. like this:

<documenttype id="HTML" internaltype="HTML" winfileextension="<strong>xtmpl</strong>,html,htm,shtml...>

works perfectly for me. i guess you know that you have to restart DW after making that change, and that if you are on a mac, it's the macfileextension you have to change.

you might also add xtmpl to Extensions.txt so they appear in File > Open. and you might consider doing all these changes in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX\Configuration instead of in C:\Programs\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX\Configuration - see "About customizing Dreamweaver in multiuser systems" in DW Help.

Add the code to MMdocs and to Extensions, works like a dream!

On my Mac OS X machine w/Dreamweaver MX 2004 there is central copy of Extensions.txt in the directory (all one line):

/Applications/Web Editing/Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004/Configuration

and a central copy of MMDocumentTypes.xml in the DocumentTypes subdirectory under the Configuration directory.

But changing these 2 files didn't seem to make any difference for me. I couldn't open .xtmpl files.

But I also found a copy of Extensions.txt under

/Users/myuserid/Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Dreamweaver MX 2004/Configuration

where /Users/myuserid is my home/login directory. When I also made the modifications to this file, I was then able to open an .xtmpl file in Dreamweaver. So I'm not sure if editing the files in both locations is required, but it seemed to work. Note that there does not seem to be a user local (~/Library/...) copy of the MMDocumentTypes.xml for me.

So now, when I open the .xtmpl template file in Dreamweaver, it's not exactly a graphical preview. For my OurOpinion.com website here's what the .xtmpl template looks like in Dreamweaver. It looks like the style sheets are not being properly applied.

I'm thinking to get the relative directories setup properly for the style sheets, I have to create a new "site" in Dreamweaver with the proper local home directory for the website, and let it know that the Drupal theme .xtmpl file is the template for that Dreamweaver site, but I have to figure out how to do this. I'm unable to create a template of type .xtmpl for a Dreamweaver site (I can create a "PHPTemplate" in DW).

Is anybody else using Dreamweaver in a fully integrated fashion? ie. with Dreamweaver "sites" and .xtmpl templates using style sheets that Dreamweaver knows how to apply?

Thanks

Yes, Indeed this copy won't let the changes apply to your account!
What I have done is simply delete this configuration folder and everything went fine.

xtmpl

In your suggestion why these around the file type?
