So, I'm thinking about the future, and when og2list comes out... (keeping my fingers crossed and thanks for the great work, everyone!)... :-)

So.... I was wondering if anyone knew what web hosts would be compatible with this module?

It seems like it requires being able to run cron pretty frequently, and the configuration seemed to require some specific access to EXIM?

Does anyone know if this is going to require a dedicated server?

Also, some webhosts, like pair.com, seem to specifically prohibit the use of mailing list software on their site.

For example, from pair's website:

Users may NOT:

# Send out mail to more than 25 addresses in one batch, whether sequentially or in parallel. Such batches must "sleep" for at least three seconds between each delivery attempt. Please consider using our pairList service for such mailings.
# Send e-mail to more than 5 recipients by way of a Web-based script. (E-mail sent by any script may be monitored and or quarantined for analysis, in order to prevent Junk E-Mail origination or propagation through our servers.)
# Send prohibitively large messages to any receiving system that cannot or does not wish to receive them. Large file transfers should be accomplished through FTP, not electronic mail.
# Run their own mailing list software, whether custom or packaged.

Would this mean I couldn't run og2list on their site?

Thanks!

Hi,

As a former pair.com user (never had any complaints, just left for a cheaper host), I can say that they only don't give you direct access to actually setting up the list. They have a web interface for making a request to set up a mailing list (they use mailman) and they do it in a few hours. I have been puzzled by this, but once the list is set up, you have full access to its admin interface and can do pretty much what you want.

About sending to more than 25 addresses- even simplenews has pretty much the same settings, so that shouldn't be an issue. The key is the gap between sending messages to bulk users. The large file transfers is more of a common sense thing, as you will appreciate.

I know lists on pair.com that go out to thousands of users and are discussion lists, not mere announcement lists. So, I think you should be quite okay with pair and og2list, especially if your cron is set to a reasonable interval.

One thing though, with any host- schedule automatic backups of both your database and drupal files so that if they ever pull the plug on your site for whatever reason, you can quickly set it up elsewhere.

Thanks for your thoughts on pair.com. (I also read about some of your experience with site5.)

That helps ease my mind a bit.... I might just bite the bullet and go with them...

Thx again,

Don't take my word! It is several months since I left pair and they may have changed their policies (mostly for the better, I would think). Do check with them directly.

Keep in mind OG2List still needs some more financial support. IDRC and CompuMentor and individuals have made great contributions, but we still need more support. (http://drupal.org/node/59785)

So feel free to make a large or small donation to the project on our website or send me an email.

Alternatively, wade into the code and start improving :)

It would be great if you could indicate exactly how much of the $7500 still needs to be met. I may be able to help only with a very small contribution, but if any donor knows the balance needed to be raised, the likelihood of their participation would probably increase.

I post updates on the bounty thread:http://drupal.org/node/59785
We'll eventually get this a little more automated.

We currently have about $3.5k left. New contributions this week from Development Seed and a couple individuals have helped.

Appreciate all the hard work you guyz are doing over there... and tho' I don't really have much in the way of funds, I'll definitely try and contribute in the ways that I can! :-)

All the best, and good luck!

...can be found here:
What modules are required for a Drupal 4.7.4 web site running OG2List and what is the script?

Has anyone gotten og2list working on shared hosting at DreamHost.com?

Also, the install document is, IMO, complicated for most beginners.

Good luck.

Hi,

We run shared and managed Drupal 4.7 and 5.1 platforms for a few dozen clients, mostly from the cultural and non-profit sector.
(managed means here that we continually update the code, find new modules and install them, run daily backups, etc.)

For one client with multiple sites I have now successfully installed og2list on 4.7

Companies and organisations interested in og2list mail2web and web2mail integration can contact us.

I agree it is a very very promising technology. In a lot of (non-tech) environments it is a nuisance for users to both have a site account, and a mailman account. This can make life so much easier!

We're based in the Netherlands, our servers are with KPN/XS4ALL.

Of course we can in no way compete with the low prices of massive hosting companies like Dreamhost.
Think around 40 or 50 euro / month excluding VAT, but this includes plenty storage space and bandwidth (we do a lot with video).
