I'm having a hard time figuring out how 'link' my primary menu items to a sub menu that i have created. I have several primary links in the header such has ford, honda, chevy. When the user clicks the primary link button i would to load/display a submenu on the left that has truck, car, etc. How do I tie the two together?

Use this module:
http://drupal.org/project/menu_block

Or if you want to do it manually, create a menu block for the submenu and adjust the visibility settings so that it shows only for the parent menu node.
