This backports from the Drupal 7 branch back to Drupal 5. Might be the first time this is done, but hey, gotta do what ya gotta do!

So... are you interested in maintaining the d5 version? ;)

Looking at this brings back memories.. I'd almost forgotten about $may_cache.

BTW, it looks like this is against HEAD (D7) which is pretty untested.

I backported from HEAD :-P . Tried to keep most of the code the same though so when we make fixes in HEAD, we could also push the fixes to the DRUPAL-5--1 branch. I'd have no problem helping maintain it. What's another module added to the list ;-) .
