Problem: For sites with lots of tags, Taxonomy filter may create a block with hundreds or even thousands of results. Blocks like this are so large that they are not useful for viewers.

Suggested solution: Allow user to set a limit for the number of terms displayed in a block. For example, the Tagadelic module allows users to set the number of terms that will be displayed in a block. The terms that are associated with fewer nodes are then not displayed.

This is similar to what you posted before at #451742: Allow for only showing tags that have a minimum number of nodes and seems like a good suggestion. I plan to implement some requested features over the next few weeks and will look to you for testing help on this one.

Ya, it's similar. I thought this one might be a bit simpler than the original suggestion. I have some more complex ideas too... I'll save those for later. :)

I'll be available for testing.

Implemented in next dev release.

You need to run database update and then set values at admin/settings/taxonomy_filter/%/edit.

Test it and let me know if this works for you.

I tried it. On database update it didn't show any updates. That is, the progress bar showed "0 of 0 updates".

There are no added settings on admin/settings/taxonomy_filter/%/edit.

I'm using the "cloud" menu template.

Based on the timestamp of your comment, it would appear the dev release had not been updated. The last release update is:

Last updated: January 6, 2010 - 07:18

Download the dev release and try again.

K, I did it again. This time it said this on update:
"The following queries were executed
taxonomy_filter module
Update #6004

* No queries"

The new fields are on the admin/settings/taxonomy_filter/%/edit page.

I think it would be better to allow users to choose a number. In my case, I would choose a high number like 50.

I chose a "maximum term count" of 20, saved it, went back to admin/settings/taxonomy_filter/%/edit page to make sure it was saved then checked the block but it still had all the terms showing. I also tried the same thing, but without going back to admin/settings/taxonomy_filter/%/edit page first and it still didn't work.

Block cache and other caching are disabled on /admin/settings/performance. I'm using the cloud menu.

I can make this a user input field instead of the select. I debated doing this in the first place. The count is off by one and I will fix that too. As stated on your other issue, my settings do not revert to zero. Please confirm this.

OneTwoTait’s picture

Yes, I'm sure about that. This feature isn't working on my site. Drupal 6.10.

Changed in next dev release created after this comment to:
- allow user input of the value
- correct application of maximum (off by one).

I can not reproduce your issue with the input values being set back to zero.

Test it and let me know if this works for you.

I updated to the latest Dev release (Jan 9).

The input method is better, but this feature still does not work on my Drupal installation.

After setting the "maximum term count" to 20, I checked a page with the Taxonomy Filter block and all terms were still showing - 200 or so terms. When I went back to .../admin/settings/taxonomy_filter/5/edit I saw that the value in "maximum term count" was now 0.

Then I set the "maximum term count" to 30, went back to .../admin/settings/taxonomy_filter/5/edit and saw that "maximum term count" was set to 30. I then checked the page with the Taxonomy Filter block and all terms were still showing. I refreshed ...admin/settings/taxonomy_filter/5/edit and saw that "maximum term count" was set back to 0. Mysterious behaviour.

Please confirm the menu_id of each of your menu templates. If one of them is zero, then you should manually change it in the database (variables table) or delete it and recreate it. On my installs, the settings are not lost and the terms displayed are correctly limited.

OneTwoTait’s picture

I used PHPMyAdmin, looked in the "variable" table, found the "taxonomy_filter_menus" one, clicked on the "edit" symbol and it showed this on the page:
"a:1:{i:5;a:5:{s:4:"name";s:9:"Tag Cloud";s:8:"template";s:5:"cloud";s:6:"module";s:8:"tf_cloud";s:5:"depth";s:1:"0";s:8:"tf_count";a:6:{s:9:"show_nums";i:0;s:10:"hover_nums";i:1;s:10:"show_empty";i:0;s:9:"add_space";i:0;s:18:"minimum_node_count";s:1:"0";s:18:"maximum_term_count";s:2:"30";}}}"

I've tried this on another install and it worked. Must have been something to do with my setup.
