I'm looking to create a site using Drupal with the same functionality as http://www.goodreads.com. Can anyone confirm that Drupal is capable of doing this? If so, by taking a quick look at it - what modules would I need?

Yep drupal can do this no problem. You'll want to look at the standard modules: cck, views, imagefield, and imagecache as well as quotes, og, and maybe imagecache_profiles.
