Hi guys,

I'm learning a lot from these forums and I've searched quite a bit on this topic, but I haven't come up with answers. Hope you can help. :)

The Goal
I'm really keen to move my blog from Joomla to Drupal.
The main reason is I like the way Drupal handles comments, and it appears other blog features (tags, trackbacks, tag clouds) can be achieved using modules.

The Challenge
So what I've got is 12 months worth of posts ordered by date and organised into 5 categories (Communication, Consumer, Environment, Futures, International) using Joomla.
I'd like to import these prior blog posts into Drupal, but I don't know how realistic that goal is.

The Call to Arms
If you have advice, pointers, suggestions or tips, I'd welcome all the help I can get!

Check out the site
My existing (joomla) site is published at: http://www.timlonghurst.com/
My new (very basic Drupal) site is published at http://www.timlonghurst.com/notepad/

Thanks in advance,

Tim

Yes it's possible to import content etc. from another CMS to Drupal but you need to know some SQL, or hire someone who does, to pull it off.

Take a look at the handbook page "Migrating from other software" http://drupal.org/node/271. Unfortunately there are no section on Mambo/Joomla yet.

"Unfortunately there are no section on Mambo/Joomla yet."
by which, of course, frjo means that you are at right place and right time to contribute to the handbook with your own experience. :)

Thanks for replying, you two!

I've had a click through my MySQL database and it looks completely possible to migrate about 150 posts from my JOOMLA! database to my DRUPAL database. (It's all about turning the Joomla! "Content" table into a Drupal "Node" table.

Frjo is right - finding/hiring someone who knows mysql will be key. I agree with tvst, that the drupal community would be enriched by a handbook/documentation how how to migrate from Joomla/Mambo to Drupal.

So... Here's my next question. How much should I budget for moving 150 posts (no comments, no other tables) from Joomla to Drupal? If people would like to quote, I can be contacted via my site. Please quote two prices: one for just migrating my site, a second for documenting it to contribute to the DRUPAL community, to make it easier for the next people! :)

Can you explain why you are moving from Joomla? I've been researching CMS packages and I've basically chosen Drupal, though Joomla, MODx, and others were on the list. (I'm in a test phase right now.) I, and I'm sure others, would like to hear why you are leaving Joomla and have chosen Drupal.
