I have entered some feeds and tried to create a saved search but I can't get it to return anything.

I think you should run cron.php first then i think it will index the data correctly for searches to show up.

to the devs - how about adding the Poormanscron module to the Managing News install? luckily, this will be in the core for D7

Cron configuration is documented... there are no plans atm to add poormanscron to MN - this is just too scary when aggregating and search indexing. The admin UI will get an overhaul with version beta 8 or 9.
