Too many days like this.
I have to find a Drupal consultant in Toronto and have them come in, sit down and go over what is wrong.
10 hours today I worked on creating a sub theme for acquia marina. Impossible. I tried every permutation I could think of. I just doesn't work.
I can't think of a simpler tutorial, and I have done it before with Zen.
I am done with this.
If I spent the last year making static HTML pages in Dreamweaver I would be making money right now.
I am booked into a trade show in four weeks. I have no website. Instead of showing people things, I will be telling them what it might be. What a waste.
I should have just kept programming my own thing, instead I listened to these idiot developers who talked endlessly about validated markup and semantic web blah blah blah....
I will take tables and content over no website. Which is what I have.
Year wasted.

Do all themes provide the ability to handle a subtheme?
I have no direct answer to my question one way or the other but I did notice : http://drupal.org/project/waffles which is a modified acquia marina and is an entire theme, instead of a subtheme and wondered why it wasn't a subtheme.
edit: answered my question with a search and found: http://acquia.com/blog/s-files-customizing-theme-sub-theme which uses acquia marina
