I'm working with Panels 3. Fairly new to it. I'm wondering if there is a pro/con to using flexible layouts vs my own custom layout? I'm just wondering as it relates to performance, memory, or anything else I'm not thinking of. But I've seen people talk about making custom layouts, but I'm wondering why if there is a flexible layout designer.

I attended a seminar where the merlinofchaos himself was presenting. He commented that the flexible tool is good for development, but actually generates inefficient code. He that once you are comfortable with your layout, then you should create an actual layout plugin. I don't think they are difficult (basically, you can copy one of the default plugins and edit it to suit.

I found some other articles / tutorials that described various process for creating custom layouts, but didn't have any luck. I read maddentim's comment and tried just copying and editing. It works great that way, but don't be put off if your Content section of panels doesn't look like you expect. If you've set your css properties, it will still display correctly.

If there is interest, I will write up the steps I took to create my custom layout.
