After updating to current version 6.x-1.1, update.php resulted in a blank page. Typing the URL site also resulted in a blank page. Rolled back to previous version 6.x-1.0-r3 solved the problem and site was again visible.

Maybe a conflict, try http://drupal.org/node/158043. Unless you can give me an error message (see linked page), I can't do much to help you. Nobody so far has reported something similiar.

Try to temporarly disable other modules that might interact with Privatemsg.
