Hi, there,

After noticing some of the shared hosting php memory limits, I saw that Host Gator has a VPS package for around $30 per month that looks good because it's managed and I won't have to do any of my own server administration.

Can anyone recommend them?

Take the $49 VPS Hostgator package which comes with CPANEL. If you are migrating a website, my recommendation is to use only necessary modules as some modules are resource intensive. In addition there are some necessary tweaking of drupal that is required, i,e make sure that your theme is optimized properly with no errors in your CSS files. There are several posting in the Drupal forums that are helpful.

I have had issues with my site BigCulture.com that I have finally realized is not related to Hostgator but bloated MySql database and scripts that were not properly updated when the site was moved from Drupal 5 to 6. The site speed and performance has improved but there are still additional work to be done. Also please use a Development site to test new updates or changes before u move to the live site.

Unless you must go for Hostgator I would suggest take a look at Servint or Wiredtree.

This VPS hosting solutoin from Hostgator is very new and I don't think any one has enough data/experience to comment on it now.

Anyone with experience with hostgator's semi-managed vps service namely level 1 package? Do they handle server security with semi-managed?

I have been hosting with Host Gator for a few months and so far so good. I am going to add Akeni Social Network software so that we can have IM and collaboration capabilities

HostGator's VPS plans use Virtuozzo virtualization software. The Drupal Community says that Xen is preferred over Virtuozzo. Has HostGator's VPS service been quick for you?

If you don't mind me asking, which VPS plan are using, and what is the nature of your website? Are you running a lot of modules? UberCart? I am considering the level 1 semi-managed VPS plan.

Is server security managed by HostGator if you get a semi-managed VPS plan?

HostGator VPS level1 and level 2 are unmanaged. The managed one start from Level 3.

Unless you are a skill webmaster, I would suggest you go with level 3 directly.
