i created a getting started pg for d7 since it was an item on addi's d7 to-do list http://drupal.org/node/515870, based on the d6 page (which incidentally was archived for no apparent reason, i unarchived it http://drupal.org/getting-started/6 and fixed a broken link). the new page is here: http://drupal.org/getting-started/7 and could probably use a review/update.

leehunter commentedOops. Just discovered this issue now after earlier today I went and archived the d6 page again and even archived the new d7 page.
Sorry about that.
If you guys still want to keep these pages, then it's ok with me if you want to bring them back but let me explain my thinking.
We need to serve different people who have very different roles and need to start in many different places. These particular getting started pages make huge assumptions about where people are coming from, what they need, and where they are going. Basically we're assuming that everyone is here because they're going to do their own installation, be their own site administrators and add their own content.
Maybe in the administration guide, I could see having a "getting started with administration" and in the theming guide a "getting started with theming" page but these generic getting started pages just repeat a small subset of what's on the docs landing page and point to a couple of places that are not useful to everyone. And we're pointing people to administration and adding content before they've even reached the installation guide.
If we add content we should really try to add stuff that's unique and clearly adds value. I know I sound a bit ruthless but I don't see that these pages make the cut.

arianek commentedyou should run this by addi, since this was on her todo list. my understanding is that it's a long standing reference page, so i'm not sure if removing them is a good idea, but i do agree there's not really a ton of content in it per se.
