What's the overlap with the Media module? Also, looking at the code, there may be conflicts with hook_media_types.

We're currently developing a 6.x module. AFAIK, Media is for Drupal 7. We need a Media module fast, so that's why we cannot wait for Media to debut.

That said, we plan to take parts of the code and merge or make submodules for Media later, so we don't duplicate efforts so much.

fast would probably be to backport media to d6, as d7 is pretty much ready.

D7 code is completely new and is integrated with Media. D6 code is deprecated and abandoned at this point.
