I've read through the threads but I'm still not totally clear on this issue

I've installed CacheRouter and configured it to file method and created a default folder for storing the files

So now I've overridden the Drupal method of caching which uses the database, right? If so does changing the page cache settings on the performance admin page have any effect on the cache now?
