unpredictable response from settings

I'm customizing B7 and finding that the administer controls don't change settings, blocks and menus the same way every time. For example, I've done everything needed to hide "Author information" but it's still there on node 1 (the only page I have built so far). This also applies to other blocks and settings. It took several tries to get the search box to appear, too.
Please advise.

The theme doesn't really have anything to do with this. Either you're seeing pages that are cached, or it may be another problem. Try the support forum.
